David: Advisory BoardDavid is the ex-MD of international über-furniture and office design companies Vitra and Herman Miller – both of which he established in the UK. In this advisorial role, he brings a large and senior drop of big business experience and wisdom to the good ship Piracy. A switched-on ‘Silver Surfer’ bar none - he was one of the first people to own an iPad in the UK - David’s on hand to offer words of experience and caution when we most need it. The agency’s directors aren’t exactly young bucks straight out of college, but it’s been invaluable having someone of David’s experience and stature in the Piracy mix.
Dominic: Sport & CSRAt the BBC, Dominic became one of its core sports presenters, being lucky enough to report from the 2006 World Cup, 2004 European Championships and the 2002 African Cup of Nations – as well as covering the Premier League for MOTD, Final Score and Football Focus. Dominic has also reported from England cricket tours to Sri Lanka, South Africa and Pakistan. He has spent the last 2 years working in the area of grassroots sport. The latter has heavily involved CSR activity and he has combined these two areas of expertise with his own TV show, ‘Your Sport’ for Channel Five.
Jonathan: Digital & Social MediaIn his own words, Jonathan’s a “…digital creative/strategist/doer that blogs about all kinds of stuff that usually involves brands, digital marketing, technology or cats”. He has a background in events, marketing and traditional PR, but became a digital specialist about 6 years ago. He headed up digital at leading technology PR agency Bite and worked with brands including Apple, Facebook, Toshiba, Samsung, Yahoo! and Disney Interactive Studios. In more recent times, he’s worked with the likes of Orange, Nokia, Microsoft, the UK Film Council and Channel 4. An award-nominated blogger and avid user of Social Media, he’s also a wannabe tinkerer, coder and Arduino hacker.
Paul: AdvertisingPaul’s roll-call of advertising agencies includes such luminaries as DDB, JWT, Publicis and Lowe. Most latterly an Independent Creative Director his work stretches across Press, Print, Outdoor, DM, TV and Digital. The happy recipient of a Cannes Gold Lion, a D&AD Silver nomination and numerous other awards, Paul’s a conceptual copywriter with a gift for getting to the point – and helping drive clients' business – whether it’s been for Polo, VW, De Beers or Rolls-Royce Aerospace. One of his recent projects has seen him writing copy for John Smith's thoroughbred racehorse 'Smithy' (so, straight from the horse’s mouth, quite literally!).
Jim: Design & DigitalWhen he’s not clearing trails, Jim’s on a mountain bike riding them. When he’s not doing either of those things, he’s creating clever work for both print and digital purposes. Jim’s worked for clients both small and large – including the likes of Panini and IPC Media. The latter experience has included work on titles as diverse as Mizz, Doctor Who magazine and Mountain Bike Rider. His studio - when he’s not in our office - is just a few miles away…in a converted pig sty. We’re not telling a porkie, honest. (Jim puts up with this sort of humour from us, as he does our jibes about ‘make the logo BIGGER’).
David: Arts & DesignDavid is a writer, editor, producer and content provider working across all media platforms. He began his career working at a major design agency, moving on to become a writer and editor on magazines such as Blueprint and writing articles about the arts, design and marketing for The Sunday Times, Telegraph and Guardian. He was launch editor of Grand Designs Magazine and is the author of a critically acclaimed book. In recent years, David’s focused on custom publishing and broadcasting projects, mainly in the arts sector. He has edited V&A Magazine since 2005 and launched the museum’s widely praised film channel in 2010.
Shirley: Trade PRShirley brings an unrivalled knowledge of the trade media across various business-to-business sectors, most notably FMCG. In true ‘poacher turned gamekeeper’ style, she was previously a journalist at both William Reed Business Media and Reed Business Information, working on a number of food, drink and technical titles. Shirley advises on all trade media activity – whether it’s planning how best to execute a launch, maximising coverage within editorial features, creating news stories or devising advertorials and print advertising. One of the most effective campaigners in trade PR, Shirley’s key skill lies in ‘thinking outside the box’ and opening up new opportunities for brands.
Jayne: Consumer PRJayne has over 20 year’s PR experience strategically directing and implementing the communications for brands such as Patak’s, Blue Dragon, Quorn, Budweiser, Stolichnaya, Morphy Richards and Lemsip. In 2003, she sold her PR agency Saffron PR to Attenborough Associates and then in 2007 the combined agency was sold to The Freshwater Group. Creative, thorough, realistic and focused, her experience includes brand building, product launches, crisis PR, event organising, promotions and experiential marketing. Jayne has worked across a variety of FMCG brands for Piracy – utilising not only her PR skills, but personal experience of raising and feeding a young family to great effect.
